Heroiczny werset
Bohaterski wiersz składa się z rymowanej linii iambicznej lub heroicznej pary. Termin ten jest używany wyłącznie w języku angielskim. W starożytnej literaturze heroiczny werset był synonimem heksametru dactylic. W tym właśnie tekście zostały napisane typowo heroiczne wiersze, Iliady i Odysei oraz Aeneid. W języku angielskim nie wystarczyło tylko jednoznacznie wyznaczyć pojedynczą linię iambiczną na pięć pobrań jako werset bohaterski, ponieważ trzeba było odróżnić pustą wersetę od dystich, która została utworzona przez bohaterską parę. To uciekł przed wypowiedzeniem Drydena, kiedy napisał "Werset angielski, który nazywamy Heroic, składa się z nie więcej niż dziesięciu sylab". Co Dryden powinien był powiedzieć "składa się z dwóch rymowanych linii, każdy z dziesięciu sylab." W języku francuskim alexandrine zawsze uważano za heroiczny środek tego języka. Daktaktyczny ruch bohaterskiej linii w starożytnej Grecji, słynnej ρυθμός ἥρώος lub "bohaterskiego rytmu", Homera, wyraża się we współczesnej Europie przez ruch iambiczny. Konsekwencją jest to, że większość pośpiechu i energii antycznej wersety, która w energicznych momentach była podobna do ładunku batalionu, jest stracona.
