Mandrillie są największymi małpami na świecie. Charles Darwin napisał w The Descent of Man, że "żaden inny członek klasy ciał ssaków nie jest tak wybitny, jak dorosłe mandrynki męskie". Mandrill jest klasyfikowany jako zagrożony przez IUCN.
