Mistycyzm (wymawianie (pomoc · info)) jest "konstelacją charakterystycznych praktyk, dyskursów, tekstów, instytucji, tradycji i doświadczeń zmierzających do transformacji człowieka, różniących się w różnych tradycjach". Określenie "mistycyzm" ma zachodnie pochodzenie, z różnymi historycznie określonymi znaczeniami. Pochodzący z greckiego μυω, oznaczający "ukrywanie", nawiązał do biblijnego, liturgicznego i duchowego lub kontemplacyjnego wymiaru wczesnego i średniowiecznego chrześcijaństwa i związany był z "nadzwyczajnymi doświadczeniami i stanami umysłu" we wczesnym okresie nowożytnym. W czasach nowożytnych "mistycyzm" nabrał ograniczonej definicji, ale szerokiego zastosowania, czyli celu "zjednoczenia z Absolutem, Nieskończonym lub Bogiem". Ta ograniczona definicja została zastosowana w celu uwzględnienia na całym świecie tradycji i praktyk religijnych. Od lat sześćdziesiątych prowadzona jest naukowa debata nad naukowymi badaniami "mistycznych doświadczeń" między podejściem wieloletnim a konstruktywistycznym.
