Normalna dystrybucja
W teorii prawdopodobieństwa rozkład normalny jest bardzo często występującym ciągłym rozkładem prawdopodobieństwa - funkcją, która mówi prawdopodobieństwo, że dowolna rzeczywista obserwacja spadnie pomiędzy dowolnymi dwoma rzeczywistymi granicami lub liczbami rzeczywistymi, gdy krzywa zbliża się do zera po obu stronach. Rozkład normalny jest niezmiernie użyteczny ze względu na centralne twierdzenie o granicy, które stwierdza, że w łagodnych warunkach średnia wielu losowych zmiennych niezależnych od tego samego rozkładu jest rozproszona w przybliżeniu normalnie, bez względu na formę pierwotnego rozkładu: ilości fizyczne, które oczekuje się, że jest sumą wielu niezależnych procesów, często mają rozkład bardzo zbliżony do normalnego. Ponadto wiele wyników i metod może być analitycznych w formie wyraźnej, gdy odpowiednie zmienne są normalnie rozprowadzane. Rozkład Gaussa jest czasami nieformalnie nazywany krzywą dzwonka. Jednak wiele innych dystrybucji ma kształt dzwonka.
