Pesymizm jest stanem umysłu, w którym przewiduje się niepożądane skutki lub uważa, że zło lub trudy w życiu przewyższają dobro lub luksus. Zamiast tego jest to filozofia lub światopogląd, który bezpośrednio kwestionuje pojęcie postępów i to, co można uznać za opartych na wierze twierdzeniach o optymizm. Filozoficzni pesymiści są często egzystencjalnymi nihilistami wierzącymi, że życie nie ma wewnętrznego znaczenia ani wartości.
