Przesłanka
Założeniem lub przesłanką jest stwierdzenie, że argumentacja twierdzi, że spowoduje lub uzasadni wniosek. Innymi słowy: założenie jest założeniem, że coś jest prawdziwe. W logice argument wymaga zbioru dwóch zdań deklaratywnych znanych jako przesłanka wraz z innym zdaniem deklaratywnym określanym jako wniosek. Ta struktura dwóch przesłanek i jedna konkluzja stanowią podstawową strukturę argumentacyjną. Bardziej złożone argumenty mogą posłużyć się szeregiem reguł umożliwiających łączenie kilku pomieszczeń z jednym wnioskiem lub uzyskanie pewnych wniosków z pierwotnego pomieszczeń, które następnie będą stanowić przesłanki dla dodatkowych wniosków. Przykładem tego jest użycie reguł wnioskowania znalezionych w logice symbolicznej. Arystoteles uznał, że jakikolwiek logiczny argument może zostać zredukowany do dwóch przesłanek i wniosków. Pomieszczenia są czasami nieprzedstawione, w takim przypadku nazywane są "brakującymi lokalami", na przykład: "Sokrates" jest śmiertelny, ponieważ wszyscy ludzie są śmiertelni. Jest oczywiste, że milcząco rozumiane twierdzenie jest takie, że Sokrates jest mężczyzną. W pełni wyrażone rozumowanie jest w ten sposób: ponieważ wszyscy ludzie są śmiertelni, a Sokrates jest człowiekiem, Sokrates jest śmiertelny.
