Saracen był terminem dla muzułmanów szeroko stosowanych w Europie w późniejszym średniowieczu. Termin znaczenia ewoluował w trakcie jego historii. We wczesnych stuleciach CE w języku greckim i łacińskim odnosi się do ludzi mieszkających na pustynnych obszarach w okolicach rzymskiej prowincji arabskiej, którzy byli wyraźnie odróżnieni od Arabów. W Europie w czasach wczesnego średniowiecza termin ten zaczął się również używać do opisywania plemion arabskich. Do 12 wieku "Saracen" stało się synonimem "muzułmanina" w średniowiecznej literaturze łacińskiej. Ta ekspansja sensu zaczęła się od wieków wcześniej wśród bizantyjskich Greków, czego dowodem były bizantyjskie dokumenty greckie z VIII wieku. W językach zachodnich do XVI wieku słowa "muzułmanin" i "islam" nie były używane, a zamiast tego "Saracen" było powszechnie używane.
