Scriptorium
Scriptorium, dosłownie "miejsce do pisania", jest powszechnie używane do odwołania się do pokoju w średniowiecznych europejskich klasztorach, poświęconych pisaniu, kopiowaniu i oświetlaniu rękopisów przez skryba mnichów. Pisemne relacje, ocalałe budynki i wykopaliska archeologiczne pokazują jednak, że w przeciwieństwie do popularnych przekonań, takie pokoje rzadko istniały: większość monastycznego pisania została zrobiona w szufladowych zagłębieniach w klasztorze lub w komórkach mnichów. Odniesienia w nowoczesnych pismach naukowych do "scriptoria" bardziej odnoszą się do zbiorowej produkcji pisemnej klasztoru, a nie do pomieszczenia fizycznego. Skryptorium było niezbędnym dodatkiem do biblioteki; gdziekolwiek była biblioteka, można by przypuszczać, że istniało skryptorium. Scriptoria w konwencjonalnym znaczeniu pokoju przeznaczonego na cel prawdopodobnie istniała tylko przez ograniczony czas, gdy instytucja lub indywidualna osoba chciała skopiować do biblioteki dużą liczbę tekstów; gdy biblioteka była już zaopatrzona, nie ma potrzeby już wyznaczonego pomieszczenia.
