Stilt to nazwa zwyczajowa kilku gatunków ptaków w rodzinie Recurvirostridae, która obejmuje również zwane "awokselami". Są one zlokalizowane w wodach podmokłych słonych lub słonych w ciepłych lub gorących klimatach. Mają bardzo długie nogi, stąd nazwa grupy i długie cienkie rachunki. Patyki zazwyczaj żywią się owadami wodnymi i innymi małymi stworzeniami i gniazdują na powierzchnię gruntu luźnymi koloniami. Większość źródeł rozpoznaje 6 gatunków w 2 rodzajach, chociaż na palach białych i hawajskich są sporadycznie uznawane podgatunki czarnej szyi. Definicja słowa stilt w słowniku
