Teak jest tropikalnym gatunkiem drzew liściastych Tectona grandis. Gatunek jest umieszczony w rodzinie Lamiaceae. Tectona grandis jest dużym, liściastym drzewem dominującym w mieszanych lasach liściastych. Ma małe, pachnące białe kwiaty i liście papirowe, które są często owłosione na dolnej powierzchni. Tectona grandis pochodzi z południowej i południowo-wschodniej Azji, głównie z Indii, Indonezji, Malezji, Tajlandii i Birmy, ale jest naturalizowana i uprawiana w wielu krajach Afryki i Karaibów. Burma stanowi blisko jedną trzecią światowej produkcji tek. Słowo tekowe pochodzi z tamilu "tekku", słowem malajalamu thekku i "telugu" z teku. Stamtąd udał się do portugalskiego teca.
