Hormony tarczycy, trijodotyronina i prohormon, tyroksyna, to hormony oparte na tyrozynach wytwarzane przez tarczycę, które są odpowiedzialne głównie za regulację metabolizmu. Jod jest niezbędny do produkcji T3 i T4. Niedobór jodu prowadzi do zmniejszenia produkcji T3 i T4, powiększa tkankę tarczycy i powoduje chorobę znaną jako kozioł.
