sp., sensul romanic este cel etimologic, de „a urî”. Semantismul
rom. se explică prin confuzia firească a reacției de a vomita cu ideea de a disprețui sau urî ceva;
cf. gr. σϰύβαλον „rest de mîncare, excremente”, față de σϰυβαλίζω „a disprețui”; sau
fr. vomir „a vomita” cu sensul de „a urî”; în expresia
celui-là, je le vomis. Cuvîntul este general cunoscut (ALR, 145) și folosit de la Coresi; astfel încît nu se poate admite cum, a presupus Juilland,
Cah. Pușcariu, I, 159, că este vorba de un împrumut din
