Mr. găvane, megl. găvan. Origine obscură. Este pus în legătură cu
bg.,
sb. vagan „strachină” (Cihac, II, 118; DAR),
bg. gavanka (Conev 64), și prin intermediul acestuia cu
ngr. γαβένα „vas”; însă explicația nu pare suficientă întrucît nu lămurește legătura cu
găun, văgăună și eventual cu
gaură; cf. și
gîf, s. m. (
Trans., blid),
găfană, s. f. (
Trans. de Vest, partea scobită a lingurii). Este posibil să existe o intenție expresivă în aceste cuvinte (după Diculescu,
Elementele, 467,
gîf este
