Var. janță. Origine incertă. Pare a fi un deverbal al
sl. žĕti, žimą, žimeši „a presa”, care nu a lăsat reprezentant direct în
rom. Der. nu este clară; și nu se poate afirma cu siguranță că este cuvînt identic cu
janț, s. n. (
Olt., țanc, stîncă),
jantă, s. f. „femeie de moravuri ușoare”, pe care DAR îl pune în legătură cu
mag. zsana „gaiță”,
jantiță, s. f. (pește mărunt). Tiktin îl pune în legătură pe
janț cu
germ. Sahne, care nu pare convingător. Dacă depinde de
sl. žĕti, aparține aceleiași familii ca
jintui, vb. (a presa, a stoarce brînza; a stoarce; a amesteca, a bate), din
sl. *
žĕtovati; jintuită (
