Introns são as porções que não codificam o DNA dentro de um gene que separa exões adjacentes. Os intrus são transcritos, mas depois são empalhados para fora do pré-mRNA, antes de serem extraídos do núcleo para tradução. As partes do gene que permanecem no mRNA maduro são chamadas de exões. A divisão do gene em intrão e exão está entre as principais características das células eucarióticas. Introns pode conter "código antigo", ou seja, partes de um gene que se tornou funcional no decorrer da história da tensão. Como eles não são diretamente relevantes para a estrutura dos produtos de tradução, eles tendem a acumular mutações como exões. Em eucariotas superiores, eles ocupam uma parcela considerável do genoma. Alguns assumem que são restos de infecções virais, ou vírus endógenos "defeituosos". Nos seres humanos, esses componentes representam 45% do genoma. Introns desempenham um papel no splicing alternativo de um gene para que um gene possa produzir várias proteínas diferentes nas seções.

Introns können „alten Code“ enthalten, also Teile eines Gens, die im Verlauf der Stammesgeschichte funktionslos geworden sind. Da sie keine direkte Bedeutung für die Struktur der Translationsprodukte besitzen, tendieren sie in höherem Maße zur Akkumulation von Mutationen als Exons. Bei höheren Eukaryoten nehmen sie einen beträchtlichen Anteil des Genomes ein. Manche nehmen an, dass es sich um Überbleibsel von viralen Infekten handelt, bzw. um "defekte" endogene viren. Beim Menschen machen diese Bestandteile 45 % des Genoms aus. Introns spielen eine Rolle beim Alternativen Spleißen eines Gens, so dass ein Gen mehrere, in Abschnitten unterschiedliche Proteine hervorbringen kann.
