Anexação
A anexação é a aquisição forçada do território de um estado por outro estado. Normalmente, está implícito que o território e a população que se anexa são as menores, mais periféricas e mais fracas das duas entidades de fusão, impedindo o tamanho físico. Também pode implicar uma certa medida de coerção, expansionismo ou unilateralismo por parte das entidades mais fortes da fusão. Por isso, os eufemismos mais positivos, como a união / unificação política ou reunificação, às vezes são vistos no discurso. A anexação difere da cessão e da amalgamação, uma vez que, ao contrário da cessão, quando o território é concedido ou vendido por meio de tratados ou amalgamação, a anexação é um ato unilateral em que o território é ocupado e mantido por um Estado e legitimado por reconhecimento geral pelos demais órgãos internacionais. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, o uso da anexação privou populações inteiras das salvaguardas previstas pelas leis internacionais que regem as ocupações militares. Os autores da Quarta Convenção de Genebra fizeram questão de "dar a essas regras um caráter absoluto", tornando muito mais difícil para um Estado ignorar o direito internacional através do uso da anexação.
