Virginia Apgar inventou a pontuação de Apgar em 1952 como um método simples e replicável para avaliar rápida e sumariamente a saúde de crianças recém nascidas imediatamente após o nascimento. Apgar era um anestesista que desenvolveu a pontuação para determinar os efeitos da anestesia obstétrica em bebês. A escala de Apgar é determinada pela avaliação do bebê recém-nascido em cinco critérios simples em uma escala de zero a dois, em seguida, resumindo os cinco valores assim obtidos.
