Bahrein, oficialmente o Reino do Bahrein é um pequeno país insular situado perto das margens ocidentais do Golfo Pérsico. É um arquipélago com a Ilha do Bahrein, a maior massa terrestre, com 55 km de comprimento por 18 km de largura. A Arábia Saudita situa-se a oeste e está ligada ao Barém pela Calçada do Rei Fahd, enquanto o Irã fica a 200 km ao norte do Golfo Pérsico. A península do Catar é para o sudeste do Golfo do Bahrein. A população em 2010 era de 1.234.571, incluindo 666.172 não nacionais. Acredita-se que o Barém seja o local da antiga terra da civilização Dilmun e, mais tarde, ficou sob o domínio dos sucessivos impérios persas partos e sassanídeos. O país foi uma das primeiras áreas a se converter ao islamismo em 628 DC. Após um período de domínio árabe, Bahrein foi ocupado pelos portugueses em 1521, que por sua vez foram expulso em 1602 por Shah Abbas I do império Safavid. Em 1783, o clã de Bani Utbah capturou Bahrein dos Qajars e desde então foi governado pela família real de Al Khalifa, com Ahmed al Fateh o primeiro hakim do Bahrein.
