O pulmão de Queensland, Neoceratodus forsteri é o único membro sobrevivente da família Ceratodontidae e certifica Ceratodontiformes. É uma das seis espécies de peixe pulmonar existentes no mundo. Endêmicos da Austrália, os Ceratodontidae são uma família antiga pertencente à subclasse Sarcopterygii, ou peixes com aleitinas carnudas. Os registros fósseis deste grupo datam de 380 milhões de anos, em torno do tempo em que as classes de vertebrados mais altos começaram a evoluir. Os fósseis de peixe pulmonar quase idênticos a esta espécie foram descobertos no norte de Nova Gales do Sul, indicando que Neoceratodus permaneceu praticamente inalterado por mais de 100 milhões de anos, tornando-o um fóssil vivo e um dos gêneros vertebrados vivos mais velhos do planeta. É um dos seis representantes existentes do antigo Dipnoi respiratório de ar que floresceu durante o período Devoniano e é o membro sobrevivente mais primitivo dessa linhagem. As outras cinco espécies de peixes frescos de água doce, quatro na África e uma na América do Sul, são muito diferentes morfologicamente de N. forsteri.
