Bathyscaphe
Um bathyscaphe é um submersível de mergulho de mergulho de mergulho livre, composto por uma cabine de tripulação semelhante a uma bathysphere, mas suspenso abaixo de um flutuador, e não de um cabo de superfície, como no design clássico da banheira. O flutuador está cheio de gasolina, porque este é prontamente disponível, flutuante e, para todos os efeitos práticos, é incompressível. A incompressibilidade da gasolina significa que os tanques podem ser construídos de forma muito leve à medida que a pressão dentro e fora dos tanques é igual e não é necessária para suportar qualquer diferencial de pressão. Em contraste, a cabine da tripulação deve suportar um enorme diferencial de pressão e é construída de forma maciça. A flutuabilidade pode ser cortada facilmente substituindo a gasolina por água, que é mais densa.
