O catolicismo é usado como um termo amplo para descrever tradições específicas nas igrejas cristãs na teologia e doutrina, liturgia, ética e espiritualidade. Nesse sentido, deve ser distinguido do sentido em que denota cristãos e igrejas, ocidentais e orientais, que estão em plena comunhão com a Santa Sé, e comumente chamados de Igreja Católica ou Igreja Católica Romana. No sentido de indicar a continuidade histórica da fé e da prática desde o primeiro milênio, o termo "catolicismo" é empregado às vezes para marcar um contraste com o protestantismo, que tende a procurar unicamente a Bíblia, conforme interpreta os princípios do século XVI Proforma protestante como seu padrão final. Foi assim utilizado pelo Movimento de Oxford.
