Halohydrin
Uma halohidrina ou um haloalcohol é um tipo de composto orgânico ou grupo funcional em que um átomo de carbono tem um substituinte halogéneo e um átomo de carbono adjacente tem um substituinte hidroxilo. Eles são derivados de álcoois são, portanto, caracterizados pela presença de ambos o grupo funcional hidroxilo e um grupo funcional de halogéneo. Haloalcoois, especialmente cloroálcoois e bromoálcoois são tipicamente sintetizados por halogenação de alcenos na presença de água ou um álcool. Uma vez que o encerramento do anel intramolecular entre os carbonos que suportam os dois grupos funcionais pode ser induzido facilmente pela reação com uma base para dar um epóxido, os haloalcoóis são úteis como intermediários na síntese química. Halohidrina são formados a partir de um alqueno numa reacção de formação de halohidrina ou de um epóxido por um ácido hidro-halogenado. Na presença de uma base, tal como hidróxido de potássio, uma halohidrina pode sofrer uma reação interna de SN2 para formar um epóxido. Este é o inverso da reação de formação de um epóxido. A epoxidação em sistemas biológicos pode ser catalisada pela deshalogenase de halohidrina. Eles são usados principalmente para reações de adição, enquanto são Anti e Markovnikov.
