Contingência (filosofia)
Na filosofia e na lógica, a contingência é o status de proposições que não são verdadeiras em todas as avaliações possíveis nem falsas em todas as avaliações possíveis. Uma proposição contingente não é necessariamente verdadeira nem necessariamente falsa. Proposições que são contingentes podem ser assim porque contêm conectivos lógicos que, juntamente com o valor de verdade de qualquer uma de suas partes atômicas, determinam o valor de verdade da proposição. Isto significa que o valor da verdade da proposição depende dos valores verdadeiros das frases que o compõem. As proposições contingentes dependem dos fatos, enquanto que as proposições analíticas são verdadeiras, independentemente dos fatos sobre os quais falam. Junto com proposições contingentes, existem pelo menos três outras classes de proposições, algumas das quais se sobrepõem: ▪ Propostas tautológicas, que devem ser verdadeiras, independentemente das circunstâncias que possam ser ou possam ser. ▪ Contradições que necessariamente devem ser falsas, independentemente das circunstâncias ou sejam. ▪ Possíveis proposições, que são verdadeiras ou poderiam ter sido verdadeiras em determinadas circunstâncias.
