Controle científico
Um controle científico é uma experiência ou observação projetada para minimizar os efeitos de variáveis diferentes da única variável independente. Isso aumenta a confiabilidade dos resultados, muitas vezes através de uma comparação entre as medidas de controle e as outras medidas. Os controles científicos são uma parte do método científico. Um exemplo de um controle experimental pode ser testar fertilizantes de plantas, dando-lhe apenas metade das plantas em um jardim: as plantas que não recebem fertilizantes são o grupo controle, porque estabelecem o nível de crescimento inicial que as plantas tratadas com fertilizantes serão comparado contra. Sem um grupo de controle, o experimento não pode determinar se as plantas tratadas com fertilizantes crescem mais do que teriam se não tratadas. Idealmente, todas as variáveis em um experimento serão controladas e nenhuma será descontrolada. Em tal experiência, se todos os controles funcionarem como esperado, é possível concluir que o experimento está funcionando como pretendido e que os resultados do experimento são devidos ao efeito da variável testada.
