O diácono é um ministério na Igreja cristã que geralmente está associado ao serviço de algum tipo, mas que varia de tradições teológicas e denominacionais. Em muitas tradições, o "diaconado", o termo para o escritório de um diácono, é um escritório clerical; em outros é para os leigos. A palavra "diácono" é derivada da palavra grega diákonos, que é uma palavra grega antiga padrão que significa "servo", "espera", "ministro" ou "mensageiro". Uma especulação comummente promulgada quanto à sua etimologia é que significa literalmente "através do pó", referindo-se ao pó levantado pelo empregado ocupado ou mensageiro. A única pessoa na Escritura a ter o título de "diácono" é Phoebe, descrita de passagem em Romanos 16: 1-2 como diácono da igreja em Cenchreae, sem deveres específicos ou autoridade definida no cargo que ocupava.
