Deperming

Deperming ou desmagnetização é um procedimento para apagar o magnetismo permanente de navios e submarinos para camuflar eles contra navios de detecção magnética e minas marinhas inimigas. Um navio ou submarino de casco de metal, por sua própria natureza, desenvolve uma assinatura magnética à medida que viaja, devido a uma interação magneto-mecânica com o campo magnético da Terra. Essa assinatura pode ser explorada por minas magnéticas ou facilitar a detecção de um submarino por navios ou aeronaves com equipamentos de detecção de anomalia magnética. As marinhas usam o procedimento de desarmamento, em conjunto com a desmagnetização, como uma contramedida contra isso. Instalações de descompensação especializadas, como a Estação de Depressão de Lambert's Point da Marinha dos Estados Unidos e a base naval Kitsap, são usadas para executar o procedimento. Os cabos de cobre de calibre pesado circundam o casco e a superestrutura da embarcação, e correntes elétricas muito altas são pulsadas através dos cabos. Deperming, or degaussing, is a procedure for erasing the permanent magnetism from ships and submarines to camouflage them against magnetic detection vessels and enemy marine mines. A sea-going metal-hulled ship or submarine, by its very nature, develops a magnetic signature as it travels, due to a magneto-mechanical interaction with Earth's magnetic field. This signature can be exploited by magnetic mines, or facilitate the detection of a submarine by ships or aircraft with magnetic anomaly detection equipment. Navies use the deperming procedure, in conjunction with degaussing, as a countermeasure against this. Specialized deperming facilities, such as the United States Navy's Lambert's Point Deperming Station and at Naval Base Kitsap, are used to perform the procedure. Heavy gauge copper cables encircle the hull and superstructure of the vessel, and very high electrical currents are pulsed through the cables. This has the effect of "resetting" the ship's magnetic signature. It is also possible to assign a specific signature that is best suited to the particular area of the world in which the ship will operate.
