Dermatoglyphics é o estudo científico das impressões digitais e pode ser rastreado até 1892 quando um dos biólogos mais originais de seu tempo, Sir Francis Galton, um primo de Charles Darwin, publicou seu trabalho agora clássico sobre impressões digitais. O estudo foi mais tarde denominado dermatoglíficos pelo Dr. Harold Cummins, o pai da análise de impressões digitais americanas, embora o processo de identificação de impressões digitais já estivesse em uso por várias centenas de anos. Todos os primatas têm rugas de pele. Também pode ser encontrado nas patas de certos mamíferos e nas caudas de algumas espécies de macacos. Em seres humanos e animais, os dermatoglifos estão presentes nos dedos, palmeiras, dedos dos pés e solas. Isso ajuda a lançar luz sobre um período crítico de embriogênese, entre quatro semanas e cinco meses, quando a arquitetura dos principais sistemas de órgãos está se desenvolvendo. A palavra dermatoglyphics vem de duas palavras gregas e refere-se às formações de fricção que aparecem nas palmas das mãos e solas dos pés. Caracteristicamente, os cabelos não crescem nessa área. As formações ridantes servem bem para melhorar o contato, uma área de múltiplas terminações nervosas e ajudas na prevenção da derrapagem.
