Descant
Descant ou discantus podem se referir a várias coisas diferentes na música, dependendo do período em questão; etimologicamente, a palavra significa uma voz acima ou removida dos outros. Um discurso é uma forma de música medieval em que um cantor cantava uma melodia fixa e outros acompanhavam improvisações. A palavra nesse sentido vem do termo discantus supra librum, e é uma forma de canto gregoriano em que apenas a melodia é anotada, mas uma polifonia improvisada é entendida. O discantus supra librum tinha regras específicas que regem a improvisação das vozes adicionais. Mais tarde, o termo veio a significar o cantor de agudos ou soprano em qualquer grupo de vozes, ou a linha mais alta em uma música. Eventualmente, pelo Renascimento, o descante se refere geralmente ao contraponto. Atualmente, o significado do contraponto é o mais comum. Descant também pode se referir ao grupo mais alto de um grupo de instrumentos, particularmente a violão ou gravador descritivo. Da mesma forma, também pode ser aplicado ao clef soprano. Descant também pode se referir a uma melodia alta e florida cantada por alguns sopranos como uma decoração para um hino.
