Este gênero é nativo do oeste e sudoeste da Europa, Ásia ocidental e central, Australásia e África do noroeste. O nome científico significa "dedo-like" e refere-se à facilidade com que uma flor de Digitalis purpurea pode ser montada sobre uma ponta do dedo humano. As flores são produzidas em uma espiga alta, são tubulares e variam em cores com espécies, de roxo a rosa, branco e amarelo. A espécie mais conhecida é o foxglove comum, Digitalis purpurea. Esta planta bienal é muitas vezes cultivada como uma planta ornamental devido às suas flores vivas que variam em cores de vários tons de púrpura através de vários tons de cinza claro e puramente brancos. As flores também podem possuir várias marcas e manchas. O primeiro ano de crescimento do foxglove comum produz apenas o caule com suas longas folhas basais.
