Eiger
O Eiger é uma montanha de 3.970 metros nos Alpes Berneses na Suíça. É o pico mais oriental de uma crista que se estende através do Mönch até a Jungfrau a 4.158 m. O lado norte da montanha sobe cerca de 3.000 m acima de Grindelwald e outros vales habitados do Oberland Bernese, e o lado sul enfrenta a região profundamente glaciada da Jungfrau-Aletsch, coberta por algumas das maiores geleiras dos Alpes. A primeira ascensão do Eiger foi feita pelos guias suíços Christian Almer e Peter Bohren e o irlandês Charles Barrington, que subiram o flanco oeste em 11 de agosto de 1858. A face norte, 1.800 m, foi escalada pela primeira vez em 1938 por uma expedição austríaca-alemã e é uma das seis grandes faces do norte dos Alpes. Desde 1935, pelo menos sessenta e quatro alpinistas morreram tentando a face norte, ganhando o apelido alemão Mordwand, literalmente "parede de assassinato" - um trocadilho no título correto de Nordwand. De Kleine Scheidegg, um túnel ferroviário funciona dentro do Eiger, e duas estações internas proporcionam fácil acesso às janelas de visualização na montanha.
