No processamento de comunicações e informações, o código é um sistema de regras para converter informações - como uma letra, uma palavra, um som, uma imagem ou um gesto - em outra, às vezes abreviada ou secreta, forma ou representação para comunicação através de um canal ou armazenamento em um meio . Um exemplo precoce é a linguagem da invenção, que permitiu que uma pessoa, através da fala, comunicasse o que ele ou ela via, ouviu, sentia ou pensava aos outros. Mas o discurso limita o alcance da comunicação à distância que uma voz pode transportar e limita a audiência aos presentes quando o discurso é pronunciado. A invenção da escrita, que converteu a linguagem falada em símbolos visuais, ampliou o alcance da comunicação entre o espaço e o tempo. O processo de codificação converte informações de uma fonte em símbolos para comunicação ou armazenamento. A decodificação é o processo inverso, convertendo os símbolos de código de volta para uma forma que o destinatário entende. Um dos motivos da codificação é permitir a comunicação em locais onde o linguagem normal comum, falada ou escrita, é difícil ou impossível.
