Um epítome é uma forma resumida ou em miniatura; uma instância que representa uma realidade maior, também usada como sinônimo de encarnação. A epitomácia representa, "ao grau de". Um resumo difere de um epítome na medida em que um resumo é feito de citações selecionadas de um trabalho maior; nenhuma escrita nova é composta, em oposição ao epítome, que é uma soma original de uma obra, pelo menos em parte. Muitos documentos dos mundos grego e romano antigo sobrevivem agora apenas "em epítome", referindo-se à prática de alguns autores posteriores que escreveram versões destiladas de obras maiores agora perdidas. Alguns escritores tentaram transmitir a posição e o espírito do original, enquanto outros adicionaram mais detalhes ou anedotas sobre o assunto geral. Tal como acontece com todas as fontes históricas secundárias, um viés diferente não presente no original pode penetrar.
