Gradiente
Em matemática, o gradiente é uma generalização do conceito usual de derivada para as funções de várias variáveis. Se f é uma função diferenciável e escalar de várias variáveis, seu gradiente é o vetor cujos componentes são as n derivadas parciais de f. É, portanto, uma função de valor vetorial. Da mesma forma que a derivada usual, o gradiente representa a inclinação da tangente do gráfico da função. Mais precisamente, o gradiente aponta na direção da maior taxa de aumento da função e sua magnitude é a inclinação do gráfico nessa direção. Os componentes do gradiente em coordenadas são os coeficientes das variáveis na equação do espaço tangente ao gráfico. Esta característica caracterizadora do gradiente permite que ele seja definido independentemente de uma escolha do sistema de coordenadas, como um campo vetorial cujos componentes em um sistema de coordenadas se transformarão quando passam de um sistema de coordenadas para outro. O jacobiano é a generalização do gradiente para funções vetoriais de várias variáveis e mapas diferenciáveis entre espaços euclidianos ou, mais geralmente, colectores.
