Hiddenite é uma variedade verde pálida-a-esmeralda de spodumene que às vezes é usada como uma pedra preciosa. Os primeiros espécimes da variedade hiddenite de spodumene foram recuperados cerca de 1879 perto do minúsculo povoado de White Plains, a oeste de Stony Point, Alexander County, Carolina do Norte. De acordo com relatos contemporâneos, um jovem chamado Lackey os chamou à atenção de J.A.D. Stephenson, um comerciante local que também era um ardente colecionador de minerais. Inicialmente, pensava-se que os esconderijos amarelados a esverdeados eram gemosa. Stephenson trouxe a descoberta à atenção do geólogo de exploração William Earl Hidden, que havia sido contratado por Thomas Edison para procurar por qualquer fonte de platina na Carolina do Norte.
