Na ciência do solo, a húmus refere-se a qualquer matéria orgânica que atingiu um ponto de estabilidade, onde ela não se desdobrará mais e, se as condições não mudarem, permanecem como faz durante séculos, se não milênios. Humus influencia significativamente a densidade aparente do solo e contribui para a retenção de umidade e nutrientes. Na agricultura, às vezes o húmus também é usado para descrever o composto adulto maduro ou natural extraído de uma floresta ou outra fonte espontânea para a alteração do solo. Também é usado para descrever um horizonte do solo que contém matéria orgânica.
