A hidrosfera na geografia física descreve a massa combinada de água encontrada, sob, e sobre a superfície de um planeta. Igor Shiklomanov, o homem selecionado pelas Nações Unidas para fazer seu inventário mundial de recursos hídricos, estimou que existem 1386 milhões de quilômetros cúbicos de água na Terra. A massa total da hidrosfera da Terra é de cerca de 1,4 × 1018 toneladas, o que representa cerca de 0,023% da massa total da Terra. Cerca de 20 × 1012 toneladas estão na atmosfera terrestre. Aproximadamente 75% da superfície da Terra, uma área de cerca de 361 milhões de quilômetros quadrados, é coberta pelo oceano.
