Hypogeal, hypogean, hypogeic e hypogeous são termos biológicos que descrevem a atividade de um organismo abaixo da superfície do solo. Na botânica, uma semente é descrita como mostrando germinação hipogâmica quando os cotilédones da semente germinante permanecem não fotosintéticos, dentro da casca de semente e abaixo do solo. O inverso, onde os cotilédones se expandem, descarta a casca de semente e se torna fotossintético acima do solo, é germinação epigélica. Nos trabalhos de purificação da água, a camada hipogâmica é um filme biológico logo abaixo da superfície dos filtros de areia lenta. Contém microorganismos que removem bactérias e atrapalham partículas contaminantes. Os termos hypogean e hypogeic são usados para organismos vivos e caveiros troglobiticais. O termo hipogeo é mais comumente usado para fungos com corpos subterrâneos de frutificação - por exemplo, trufas. Os termos opostos são epigean, epigeic e epigeous.
