Hipótese
Uma hipótese é uma explicação proposta para um fenômeno. Para que uma hipótese seja uma hipótese científica, o método científico exige que se possa testá-la. Os cientistas geralmente baseiam hipóteses científicas em observações anteriores que não podem ser explicadas satisfatoriamente com as teorias científicas disponíveis. Mesmo que as palavras "hipótese" e "teoria" sejam freqüentemente usadas de forma sinônima, uma hipótese científica não é a mesma coisa que uma teoria científica. Uma hipótese científica é uma explicação proposta de um fenômeno que ainda precisa ser rigorosamente testado. Em contraste, uma teoria científica sofreu testes extensivos e geralmente é aceita como a explicação precisa de uma observação. Uma hipótese de trabalho é uma hipótese aceita provisoriamente proposta para pesquisas futuras. Um significado diferente do termo hipótese é usado na lógica formal, para denotar o antecedente de uma proposição; assim, na proposição "Se P, então Q", P denota a hipótese; Q pode ser chamado de conseqüente. P é a suposição em uma pergunta What If.
