Insurgência
Uma insurgência é uma rebelião armada contra uma autoridade constituída quando aqueles que participam da rebelião não são reconhecidos como beligerantes. Uma insurgência pode ser combatida através de uma guerra contra a insurreição e também pode ser combatida por medidas para proteger a população e por ações políticas e econômicas de vários tipos visando minar as reivindicações dos insurgentes contra o regime em exercício. A natureza das insurgências é um conceito ambíguo. Nem todas as rebeliões são insurgências. Houve muitos casos de rebeliões não-violentas, usando resistência civil, como na Revolução do Poder Popular nas Filipinas na década de 1980 que derrubou o Presidente Marcos e a Revolução Egípcia de 2011. Onde uma revolta toma a forma de rebelião armada, pode não deve ser visto como uma insurgência se existe um estado de beligerância entre um ou mais estados soberanos e forças rebeldes. Por exemplo, durante a Guerra Civil Americana, os Estados Confederados da América não foram reconhecidos como um Estado soberano, mas foi reconhecido como um poder beligerante e, portanto, os navios de guerra confederados receberam os mesmos direitos que os navios de guerra dos Estados Unidos em portos estrangeiros.
