Involuto
Na geometria diferencial das curvas, uma involuta é uma curva obtida a partir de outra curva dada, anexando uma cadeia estelar imaginária à curva dada e rastreando sua extremidade livre à medida que ela é enrolada na curva dada; ou em reverso, desenrolado. É uma roleta em que a curva de rolamento é uma linha reta contendo o ponto de geração. Por exemplo, um involuto se aproxima do caminho seguido de um tetherball à medida que a corda de conexão é enrolada em torno do pólo central. Se o pólo central tiver uma seção transversal circular, então a curva é involuta de um círculo. Alternativamente, outra maneira de construir o involuto de uma curva é substituir a string esticada por um segmento de linha que é tangente à curva em uma extremidade, enquanto a outra extremidade traça o involuto. O comprimento do segmento de linha é alterado por uma quantidade igual ao comprimento do arco percorrido pelo ponto tangente à medida que ele se move ao longo da curva. O evoluto de um involuto é a curva original, menos porções de curvatura zero ou indefinida.
