Lag é uma falha de um aplicativo para responder em tempo hábil aos insumos. Em referência aos videogames, o atraso é a demora entre uma ação de um jogador e a reação do jogo. Em aplicações distribuídas, o atraso geralmente é causado pela latência de comunicação, que é o tempo necessário para que um pacote de dados enviado seja recebido na outra extremidade. Inclui o tempo para codificar o pacote para transmissão e transmiti-lo, o tempo para esses dados atravessarem o equipamento de rede entre os nós e o tempo para receber e decodificar os dados. Isso também é conhecido como "latência unidirecional". Um limite mínimo de latência é determinado pela distância entre dispositivos comunicantes e a velocidade na qual o sinal se propaga nos circuitos.
