A romanização ou a latinização - nos significados históricos e culturais de ambos os termos - indicam diferentes processos históricos, como a aculturação, integração e assimilação de populações recentemente incorporadas e periféricas pela República Romana e o Império Romano posterior. A historiografia antiga romana e a historiografia italiana até o período fascista costumavam chamar esses vários processos da "civilização dos bárbaros". A aculturação passou de cima para baixo, as classes superiores adotaram a cultura romana primeiro e os velhos caminhos que se prolongam mais tempo nos distritos periféricos entre os camponeses. Os reféns desempenharam um papel importante neste processo, como crianças de elite, desde Mauretania até a Gália, foram levadas a ser criadas e educadas em Roma. A antiga historiografia romana e a historiografia tradicional italiana identificaram com confiança os diferentes processos envolvidos com uma "civilização dos bárbaros". Os historiadores modernos tomam uma visão mais matizada: ao fazerem a paz com Roma, as elites locais poderiam tornar sua posição mais segura e reforçar seu prestígio. Novos temas incluem o estudo dos valores pessoais e grupais e a construção da identidade, o aspecto pessoal da etnogênese.
