Lenição
Na lingüística, a linguagem é um tipo de mudança de som que altera consoantes, tornando-os mais sonoros. A palavra lenição em si significa "amaciamento" ou "enfraquecimento". Lenition pode acontecer de forma sincronizada e diacronica. Lenition pode envolver mudanças como fazer uma consoante mais sonora, fazendo com que uma consoante perca seu lugar de articulação, ou mesmo fazendo com que uma consoante desapareça inteiramente. Um exemplo de lenição sincrônica em inglês é encontrado em flapping em alguns dialetos: a / t / de uma palavra como a espera se torna mais sonora na forma relacionada à espera. Alguns dialetos do espanhol mostram a debucização de / s / para o final de uma sílaba, de modo que uma palavra como estamos "nós somos" é pronunciada. Um exemplo de lenição diacrónica pode ser encontrado nas línguas romances, onde o / t / de Latin patrem se torna em padre italiano e em padre espanhol, enquanto em francês pai e pai português desapareceu completamente. Junto com a assimilação, a linguagem é uma das principais fontes de mudança fonológica das línguas.
