Mastigação
Masticação ou mastigação é o processo pelo qual o alimento é esmagado e moído pelos dentes. É o primeiro passo da digestão, e aumenta a área superficial dos alimentos para permitir uma quebra mais eficiente por enzimas. Durante o processo de mastigação, o alimento é posicionado pela bochecha e língua entre os dentes para moagem. Os músculos da mastigação movem as mandíbulas para trazer os dentes para contato intermitente, oclusão e abertura repetidas. À medida que a mastigação continua, os alimentos são mais macios e mais quentes, e as enzimas na saliva começam a quebrar os carboidratos nos alimentos. Após a mastigação, a comida é engolida. Ele entra no esôfago e via peristaltismo continua até o estômago, onde ocorre o próximo passo de digestão. A premastição às vezes é realizada por pais humanos para bebês que não conseguem fazê-lo por si mesmos. O alimento é mastigado na boca do pai em um bolus e depois transferido para o bebê para consumo. Gado e alguns outros animais, chamados ruminantes, mastiguem mais de uma vez para extrair mais nutrientes. Após a primeira rodada de mastigação, essa comida é chamada de cud.
