Na química orgânica, um tiol é um composto de organossulfureto que contém um grupo sulfidrilo ligado a carbono. Os tióis são o análogo de enxofre de álcoois, e a palavra é um portão de "thion" + "álcool", com a primeira palavra derivada do grego θεῖον = "enxofre". O grupo funcional -SH propriamente dito é referido como um grupo tiol ou um grupo sulfidrilo. Muitos thiols têm odores fortes que se assemelham ao do alho. Os tióis são utilizados como odorantes para auxiliar na detecção de gás natural, e o "cheiro de gás natural" é devido ao cheiro do tiol utilizado como odorante. Os tióis são muitas vezes referidos como mercaptanos. O termo mercaptan / mərkæptæn / é derivado do mercurio latino captans porque o grupo tiolato se liga tão fortemente com compostos de mercúrio. Os tióis reagem com mercúrio para formar mercaptides.
