Mogadíscio
Mogadíscio, conhecido localmente como Xamar, é a maior cidade da Somália e a capital do país. Localizado na região costeira de Banaadir, no Oceano Índico, a cidade tem servido de porto importante por séculos. A partir de 2009, tinha uma população de 1.353.000 habitantes. A tradição e os registros antigos afirmam que o sul da Somália, incluindo a área de Mogadíscio, foi historicamente habitado por caçadores-coletores de descendência de Khoisan. Estes foram posteriormente acompanhados pelos agro-pastores Cushitic, que continuariam a estabelecer aristocracias locais. A partir dos séculos 9 ou 10, os comerciantes árabes e persas também começaram a se instalar na região. A cidade tornou-se a capital da Somalilândia italiana no período colonial. Pós-independência, era conhecido e promovido como a Pérola Branca do Oceano Índico. Após a expulsão do regime de Siad Barre em 1991 e a guerra civil que se seguiu, várias milícias lutaram pelo controle da cidade, posteriormente substituídas pela União dos Tribunais Islâmicos. A UTI depois se separou em grupos mais radicais, nomeadamente Al-Shabaab, que lutou contra o governo federal de transição e seus aliados da AMISOM.
