The scratch hardness test was invented by the Viennese mineralogist Friedrich
Mohs (1773–1839). He developed a scale of ten minerals of increasing hardness

On the Mohs scale, as it is called, the softest mineral, talc, has a hardness level of
1 because every other mineral can scratch it. In the middle of the Mohs scale is
apatite, a rare mineral that can be cut as a gemstone and is used for jewelry.
