Mountbatten é o nome de família originalmente adotado por um ramo da família Battenberg durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial devido ao crescente sentimento anti-alemão entre o público britânico. Em 14 de julho de 1917, o príncipe Louis de Battenberg assumiu o sobrenome Mountbatten para ele e seus descendentes e foi criado o Marquês de Milford Haven. O nome é uma anglicização do Battenberg alemão, uma pequena cidade no Hesse. O título de conde de Battenberg, mais tarde príncipe de Battenberg, foi concedido a um ramo morganático da Casa de Hesse-Darmstadt em meados do século XIX.
