Uma mula é a descendência de um burro masculino e um cavalo feminino. Cavalos e burros são espécies diferentes, com diferentes números de cromossomos. Dos dois híbridos F1 entre essas duas espécies, uma mula é mais fácil de obter do que um hinny. O tamanho de uma mula e o trabalho ao qual ela é colocada depende em grande parte da criação da barragem da mula. Uma mula feminina que tem ciclos de estro e, portanto, em teoria, pode levar um feto, é chamado de "molly" ou "Molly mule", embora o termo às vezes seja usado para se referir a mulas femininas em geral.
