Na computação, a multitarefa é um método onde várias tarefas são realizadas durante o mesmo período de tempo - elas são executadas simultaneamente em vez de seqüencialmente. As tarefas compartilham recursos de processamento comuns, como uma CPU e memória principal. A multitarefa não significa necessariamente que várias tarefas estão sendo executadas exatamente no mesmo instante. O ato de reatribuir uma CPU de uma tarefa para outra é chamado de uma mudança de contexto. Quando os interruptores de contexto ocorrem com freqüência suficiente, a ilusão de paralelismo é alcançada.
